In 2006, I was President of the Pleasant Hill Chamber of Commerce. Trust you me, it was a very stressful year working with a 140+ members, new branding, updating by-laws, helping with events, and running my own web business.
What happened after my one year term? I went grey. Yes, I did. The stress caught up to me and the decision to dye my hair was ongoing. In the 1990s, I started doing the highlight thing. Years later, it was more of a “cover up the white hairs-thing.” But, as any busy person does, they tend to put things off. That’s what I did. So, the greys were looking more and more dominant and I was getting into procrasination more and more.
The turning point.
At a chamber-related event, my father-in-law attended with my business partner/spouse. He noticed my new greys and had a nice giggle about it. However, my spouse said, “Wow, that actually looks really cool.” Well, I started looking like “Rogue” from the X-men series and thought, “Lets go with it.” When I started working with the hair professionals, they embrassed and called it, “Rockin’ Stacy London” from What Not to Wear. I kept the grey hairs of honor and, strangely, keep getting great compliments about it.
Being in the web industry, people stereotype youth with knowing technology. At this point of my life, folks gotta start embracing the older look for I.T. Society better get used to it. More and more of us grey-haired-babes are out there running stuff. So get used to it. As far as working on a new hair color, probably not for now. At least I can always get a trim and keep the hair style industry in business.
